Line dot electric shock! Spider crawling up your back! Tight squeeze cool breeze! Playing dodge ball. Truth or dare? You promised, that’s the rules. Ugly bodies. Graffiti in a public toilet. Third-wheeling. Craving eye contact. Symphony of grotesque and vulgar. Dare me. I’ll do it. I don’t care. I’ll do anything. Just tell me and I’ll do it. How do you say stop when the pressure of the group is so intense?
Faster is an original devised work employing physical theatre and live painting. The piece explores the speed at which our lives move as we journey through adolescence – both externally and internally. Faster performed outdoors in the West Courtyard of the Gorman Arts Centre and incorporated light and sound specifically designed for the conveyance of the story outdoors at night. Faster was creatively developed collaboratively by the cast aged between 13 and 18 years and the directors Emily Sheehan and Kyle Walmsley. The performances examine both the emotional and biological changes we experience as we grow up demonstrating the power of the adolescent voice.
“The east courtyard of Gorman Arts Centre proved an exquisite location for this exercise. Backed by perfumed wisteria in full bloom, a sky that seemingly lit up and a half-moon above, nature was enhanced with sophisticated side-lighting to show off the actors’ bodily movements and strip fluorescent lighting to light up their faces.” – Helen Musa, City News
