Our Drama Workshops are where theatre-making begins. Across the term, young artists explore storytelling, acting, and movement through playful, engaging activities and practical skill-building – all guided by a professional theatre artist. It’s a warm, supportive space where creativity thrives.
Young artists:
- Build acting, movement, and storytelling foundations
- Develop their creative voice and artistic confidence
- Collaborate, experiment, and form friendships in a supportive creative community
These workshops are the perfect place to start your Canberra Youth Theatre journey — or to keep developing your craft between performance projects.
Term 1 and 4 workshops conclude with a studio-based ‘open workshop’ where families and friends join us in the studio to participate in activities and experience what the ensemble has created across the term.

- Removing barriers to participation
- Offering real-world creative experiences
- Championing diverse voices
- Supporting emerging artists as future cultural leaders
We collaborate with artists, schools, and community organisations to unlock access and resource young people who may otherwise struggle to find a creative pathway.
The Culture We Build Together
Participating at Canberra Youth Theatre means being part of a professional artistic community. We ask young artists to bring:
- Commitment to the work, the process, and fellow collaborators
- Courage to take creative risks and explore new approaches
- Respect for diverse perspectives, artistic choices, and shared rehearsal space
- Curiosity approaching each project as an opportunity to grow
- Professionalism meeting expectations you’d find in any theatre company
Through this shared practice, we strengthen the our arts sector, build opportunities for young artists, and celebrate Canberra’s growing creative community.

The care you showed the kids, and the commitment to their development and experience: just exceptional. The experience of it will have a significant influence on all the kids, and we will see it not just now, but well into their futures, no matter what they choose to do with them. It has had several positive impacts – an increase in confidence, willingness to ‘have a go’ at things, a sense of ‘I can do this!’
