Canberra Youth Theatre is back at the Canberra Writers Festival — and this time we’re so stoked we’re showing up twice! Join us as we celebrate last years winner Sarah Carroll and as we announce the next Emerging Playwright Commission Winner.

Meet You At The Barricade: A Work-in-Progress

Sarah Carroll won last year’s Emerging Playwright Commission. Over the past twelve months, she’s been developing her new work, Meet You At The Barricade, with artists from Canberra Youth Theatre. A passionately quirky, cross-country fangirl road trip, this work-in-progress celebrates stan culture, and the messy magic of finding your people.

This reading is a look inside that process. Scripts in hand, ideas in flux, structure still being found — this is the part where a writer finds out what her story does to an audience, and what it still needs to become. This is an invitation to be a part of how the work gets made.

Join us in celebrating the new voices shaping the future of Australian theatre. Canberra Youth Theatre’s Emerging Playwright Commission is a career-changing opportunity for an emerging playwright to create a play that brings the stories and voices of young people to the stage.

At this special event, hear excerpts from the three outstanding finalists from around the country, showcasing the imagination of a new generation of writers. The winner will then be announced, receiving a full commission to develop a brand-new work that continues Canberra Youth Theatre’s commitment to nurturing exceptional theatrical talent.
