An Important Update

Monday 23 March 2020

It is with both great sadness, and hope for a vibrant future, that Canberra Youth Theatre is suspending all workshops and training programs for the rest of Semester One, effective immediately.

We are devastated by the impact this virus is having on our community, and on our capacity to continue to deliver high quality theatre productions and training. The health and wellbeing of our young artists, staff and community is our first priority and the suspension of our activities is an essential step to help curb the impact of this pandemic.

For now, all workshops are suspended. Over the coming weeks, we will be working to create alternate methods of engagement and connection for our young artists. We hope to be able to return our regular workshop program for Semester Two, but will keep you updated as the situation progresses.

It was only two months ago that we launched our 2020 season and we are disappointed that we will not be able to deliver this artistic program as initially planned.

  • Our co-production with The Street Theatre of I’ve Been Meaning To Ask You has been cancelled for this year. However, we hope that we will be able to bring this wonderful work to Canberra in 2021.
  • Our production of Normal that was scheduled for May has been postponed. We are investigating alternative dates to present this important play.
  • There are currently no changes to our production of Impending Everyone later in the year, and we hope to be able to present this work as planned.

These are difficult and extraordinary times, and the financial impact of cancelling our programs is unparalleled. We are one of hundreds of theatre companies across the country that are cancelling programs and productions over the coming months.

We are deeply aware of the vulnerability of the casual artists who are the lifeblood of our arts sector, and are now facing the prospect of lost income over the coming months. Canberra Youth Theatre is a small company, and we will continue to do everything we can to support the amazing people who deliver our programs, but this will put us under serious financial strain. If you are in a position to do so, we are asking you to donate the workshop payments you have already made. This will be a tax deductible donation, with receipt provided, in lieu of a refund. Your generosity will directly assist us in supporting our artists and keeping Canberra Youth Theatre running.

We will be directly contacting all participants involved in our current workshop program over the next couple of days.

We will be back soon! We are working tirelessly behind the scenes to support our young artists, and will continue to develop new programs and projects, ensuring an exciting future for Canberra Youth Theatre. In the meantime, please stay safe, and take care of yourself and those around you.
